Button Quail taking a dust bath

Button Quail and Dust Bathing

Button Quail do not usually choose to bathe in water but prefer to take dirt or dust baths.  It is a good idea to offer a container of play sand for them to bathe in.  They also love clay powder (but I don’t suggest offering this unless you want clay to coat everything in the room).

I recently tried to use sani-chips as bedding. They are light weight and the birds love to bathe in them. The advantage to humans is that the bedding has been screened for dust so is actually easier on my lungs 🙂 The female  in the featured photo dove in within minutes of my replacing her pine shavings with sani-chips. The drawbacks to sani-chips are cost and that they are so light weight that they tend to fly up when the birds bathe and land in food and water. One partial solution to this problem is to place food and water on a brick paver. A few pieces will still make it in but nothing like if the food and water is placed on the bottom of the cage without being raised up at all.
